Football Re-Framed: A Photo Essay
In a culmination of every composition and communication lesson from my Visual Communication course, I ended the semester by developing, documenting, and presenting a photojournalism essay that was published in both print and digital formats.
My goal in creating this photo essay was to demonstrate my growth in shooting and editing photos, designing a print layout, formatting a web design, and integrating key strategies of reporting, storytelling, typography, and overall composition.
This project's theme was "Behind the Scenes," one I knew I wanted to bring to my work as the Lead Creative Photographer for Washington State University Football. Having been instructed to provide access to a process, place, or event that is often hidden from the public eye, I aimed to bring light to the daily efforts that go into working as a photographer for a collegiate athletics program.
Thus, I created "Football Re-Framed: A Day in the Life of a WSU Football Creative Photo Intern." Following the daily activities of one of the photo interns on our creative team, I stepped back from my role with WSU Football to capture intern Brandon Willman's day through the eyes of an outside observer.
Throughout each step in producing this photo essay, I was able to reflect and appreciate the work that my creative team does. It offered me new insight into the intricacies that keep a college football team's content and social presence consistent—little processes such as daily shooting or standardized editing that I often overlook as a photographer, so entrenched in the system myself.
I redeveloped a journalistic love for true storytelling beyond stills, and this project has made me more intentional about the work I do and the images I capture.
